China Log - The Beginning

Well, Mrs. Tully Mars’ brother has lived in China, Twain and various places in Asia for years and he is finally settling down by getting married. We are all excited for him and there are several family members headed west to attend the wedding. Using this as an “excuse” to take a vacation, we’ve booked a tour from one of the on-line agencies we read about in the Wall Street Journal. The tour takes us to Beijing, Suzhou, Tongli, Hangzhou and Shanghai; ending in Shanghai we have extended our stay by three days to attend the wedding and enjoy a truly traditional Chinese wedding. We decided on an organized tour package so we can hit the “highlights” of the country and see some of the more advertised areas of China. Not a true adventure like our cycling friends Bob and Claire’s trip in search of Shangri-la via an unsupported cycling trip. Now that is an experience!
Our trip will be the traditional tourist visit with a few of my “Tully Mars” moments thrown in to spice things up. I fully intend to experience the culture thru their food and other truly Chinese experiences. Our adventurous natures and hearts will lead us along the path of enlightenment and in search of our own Shangri-la! We will not be taking anything for granted and plan on leaving our “American” expectations of vacation behind. It’s the only way to have a relaxing and enjoyable trip. We are looking forward to the “culture shock” and want to drink it in.
I will try to post daily the photos and notes from all our own mini adventures along the tour.
